Smart Vision Systems Revolutionize Industrial Robotics

For example, at a Detroit-based Stellantis assembly plant, a giant robot arm kept freezing in placereports The New York Times. The arm was programmed to pick panels off a rack and hoist them so they could be welded onto Dodge Durangos and Jeep Cherokees. But whenever a panel sat even slightly out of position on the rack, the robot got confused and stopped working.

The company was founded in 2019 as a graduate school project; after spending time in a business incubator in Shenzhen, the founders were inspired to combine proprietary software with off-the-shelf hardware to modernize existing industrial robotsIts software gives robots the ability to map the environment around them in 3D and uses CAD models to train robots to recognize parts,” The Times explains.  

Soinstead of buying all new vision-embedded equipment — costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and sending perfectly good hardware to the scrap heap — Stellantis was able to retrofit existing robot arms with Inbolt's cameras. This let the robots "see" for the first time and enabled the company to reassign robot tenders to higher-value activities.
